Steven Quartz Universe
- Gem: Rose Quartz
- Weapons: Sword and Shield
- Known fusion: Stevonnie (with Connie)
Steven Quartz Universe (voiced by Zach Callison) – The main character, the youngest Crystal Gem member and the only male on the team. He is half-human, half-gem, the product of the love between Rose Quartz, original leader of the Crystal Gems, and his human father, Greg Universe. Rose had to give up her physical form to allow Steven to be born, and he has thus inherited her gem stone, a rose quartz embedded in his belly button.
His gem weapon is shown in "Gem Glow" to be a shield; his ability to consciously summon it was at first limited, but has it slowly grown in some episodes. He also has a sword that once belonged to his mother as well, which he can pull from his pet lion's mane. His saliva also inherited the powers of Rose's tears (which could heal things, such as cracked gems, and make plants grow and come alive into an army). In "Monster Buddies", he learns how to form bubbles to contain and store corrupted gems' gemstones. He is a chubby, enthusiastic and often musically talented person, as he plays the ukulele and is prone to breaking into song at anytime. He is eager to prove his abilities and his worth as a Crystal Gem.
The three remaining Crystal Gems take the combined roles of being his family and teachers in his life, looking after Steven at his young age. They live together in a combination of a suburban house and magical crystal temple near the sea. When not on missions with the Crystal Gems, Steven is usually at the Big Donut or spending time with Connie or Greg.
Despite the fact that he is the only one of the Crystal Gems that is not named after his gem, his middle name is still "Quartz", which was his mother's last name. His part-Gem, part-human origin has actually served as an advantage, as he was immune to the force fields and "Gem destabilizers" on board the Homeworld Gem spaceship in "Jail Break". Steven's Gem heritage also gives him greater strength and resilience than that of a regular human; he stayed conscious in the vacuum of space for a relatively long period in "Warp Tour", in "Joy Ride", he easily lifts Jenny out of harm's way, and in "The Return", he set off the air bag in Greg's van by punching the dashboard.
In "Fusion Cuisine", Steven was grounded from TV for 1,000 years. But the ban from TV was lifted in "Joy Ride." His favorite TV show is "Crying Breakfast Friends".
